"In crunching the number of satellites that would be covering the US at any one time, the analysts conclude that Starlink can serve 485,000 simultaneous data streams in the US with 100Mbit/s speeds if all 12,000 Starlink satellites are operational." Why all the interest in 100 meg service? To be able to live out of core population areas and get reliable, low latency, no or large data caps with 25 meg or even 12 meg service would be wonderful. https://www.lightreading.com/4g3gwifi/starlinks-network-faces-significant-limitations-analysts-find/d/d-id/764159?_mc=RSS_LR_EDT

At 18:36 EDT I saw my Viasat business connection go down here in Maryland east of DC. Reports seem to be coming in to downdetector, and calling the Viasat support line results in a busy signal or disconnection. Anyone know what's going on? [att=1]

Know how it is sometimes difficult to locate rafters to properly attach mount to a roof or studs in a wall? I carry a strong magnet in my bag to find the nails nailing down the roof/wall sheeting. My favorite is a magnet also called Zingers ( https://supermagnetman.com/products/zingers ) Easy to roll around and they ’snap’ to a nailhead They are nearly impossible to loose as they stick to everything in the bag I would be lost sometimes without it

[Viasat] Viasat Unlimited In PA

Hi all, I know this forum doesn't get a whole lot of traffic, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Unlimited Silver plan and Viasat Voice service. I'm looking at moving a relative away from ATT LTE service, as they have started horrid traffic mitigation that blocks new http/https requests on port 80/443 until the modem unit is rebooted. We have become frustrated with that, so the only other option is Viasat or Hugesnet. Hughes doesn't offer an unlimited plan, and trying to explain data buckets to a 85yr old who wants to use facebook is something that I'd like to avoid. Also thought I should add that I checked the website and found that I can now get unlimited gold, but the online order form won't let me place a order "Viasat Internet may be available in your area, however it is not available for purchase online at this time.". I'm located in Indiana, PA, so beams might be full.

It's emerged that SpaceX's Starlink satellites have been delivering internet services since early August to the Washington state military's emergency management unit helping residents recover from recent wildfires. SpaceX showed internet performance tests with download speeds of between 102Mbps to 103Mbps, upload speeds of 40.5Mbps to not quite 42Mbps, and a latency of 18 milliseconds to 19 milliseconds. https://www.zdnet.com/article/spacexs-starlink-in-action-internet-satellites-keep-emergency-workers-online-amid-wildfires/

Nov. 5, 2020 Viasat designs bus-sized, high-orbit Internet satellites. It is building a constellation of three new ones — each with a one terabyte of capacity — that will give the company a global Internet footprint. The first is slated to launch late next year and provide coverage across North and South America, delivering faster speeds than the current satellites and hefty data usage allowances. . The second is expected to be in orbit six months later with coverage across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The exact timing for the third ViaSat-3 over Asia is to be determined. .. .. Average monthly revenue per subscriber edged above $100 in the quarter as more customers opted for higher-priced “unlimited” data plans amid remote work and school.

December 11, 2020, Viasat's 'No Speed Limits' Internet Available for G280 Viasat has made its Ka-band in-flight connectivity (IFC) service available on the Gulfstream G280 super-midsize business jet, the satcom provider announced yesterday. The addition comes following Viasat’s July removal of connectivity speed limits for business aviation. “In working with Gulfstream to equip their G280 aircraft with our certified equipment, we can enable their customers to have a premium IFC experience,” said Claudio D’Amico, business area director for Viasat business aviation. “In fact, Gulfstream customers flying with our new 'no speed limit' service plans typically experience speeds greater than 40 Mbps.”

[Viasat] Viasat installing mystery boxes in Ohio

Hey so I live in rural Southern Ohio and apparently Viasat is installing some kind of equipment on my neighbors property. I haven't got a chance to see it yet but I'm friends with his wife and she said they leased space from him for 20 years to install some kind of panels or boxes. It seems they are currently running fiber cable to his property. Does anyone know what these might possibly be used for? I'll try to get pics as soon as I get a chance.

[Viasat] Worst Service Ever

So I had my internet with Viastat (although my modem says Exede) installed just over two weeks ago. I ordered the internet through an online sale, marketed to me via Facebook. The sale was short and sweet, and I kept screen shots of everything. I was told I would have the Gold Plan, 30mbps average speeds, and unlimited data for $120 a month. End of story. I took off of work for the appointment. It rained for about an hour that day near the beginning of my appointment window and stopped. I then get a message sent to me saying my appointment has been cancelled for weather and will be the next day. I immediately responded that I will lose another day's pay and asked if with four hours left in my window, could they not at least wait and TRY to install it if it was clear before just cancelling. I did get someone to come just before the end of the day. The tech was nice. That's the extent of my compliments for this company. After installation he brings me his phone/device for my to sign my contract to sign. I read a portion about speeds being prioritized after 100gb of data being used. I specifically asked him if I would be castrated down to near dial up speeds, and he ASSURED me that with the plan I had, as their "top of the line plan", it would never be that slow; that maybe it would go down to around 10mbps. I asked because that was a huge concern. I skimmed the rest of this long document on this tiny screen the best I could without wanting to make the man stand for long in my home, nor wanting to touch his screen further with the whole coronavirus epidemic going on. So I sign, and that's that. I then get an email that my bill is actually $170 a month, PLUS $9 a month for some care package, with a promo price of $120 for three months. I was FURIOUS about not ever being told that by anyone. Again, I HAVE ALL SCREEN SHOTS OF MY SALE. So the next two weeks go and to be honest the internet is awful. I can't ever see anything in HD as they said I would likely be able to, my children can't even play a basic video game that requires less then 2mbps because of the horrible 800 ping, and I only got speeds over 10mbps ONCE, though I paid for that "top of the line plan"😑. So then my 16th day I somehow reached my data cap of 100mbps, mind you we use hotspots for most of what we do in the house 😱 so I am astounded and beyond confused. And then when I go to use the internet, and pull up a web page it looks like back when I was 12 and had dial up. I couldn't even load but a partial page, in chunks. So I finally get to the speed test and see I'm getting 64kbps. THAT IS LIKE DIAL UP!!! I then waste my time contacting online Chat, assuming that logically, there must be a problem, only to find out NOPE, because I reached my threshold on my "Unlimited" plan, I'm being prioritized during congestion (mind you this is at midnight! Not prime time!). I thought I was going to lose my mind. So I clarified with the rep, that Viastat wants me to pay a total amount $70 more than I was ever told per month, but then I'm really only going to have internet I can use for half of it?!? I was told, "that's how the unlimited plans work". But here's the thing people reading, that's not an unlimited plan because you are not providing me with usable data after 100mbps. According to the FCC website, high speed data rates that are considered sufficient minimum speeds for normal present use are 4mbps, and currently being reviewed because there are concerns that speeds under 20mbps are not sufficient. Viastat does not need to give me a speed that is not usable to give other people a usable speed or they wouldn't have been able to provide me with speeds over 10 prior. I now have internet I can't even use, and a rep so unapologetic and smug, even though I addressed this very issue before signing anything!!! I NEVER WOULD HAVE AGREED TO INTERNET I KNEW WOULDNT WORK! WHO WOULD?! Not anyone. But they prey on the mis-informed and clearly make false promises to get you locked into a contract with no free look period. I was blatantly lied to and manipulated into thinking I was getting some great, permanent price, even before installation by a sales rep, and then lied to further at installation. I have never had such a poor experience with an internet provider. I believe they market to, or rather target unfortunate rural customers like me without several internet options, hoping we will settle for the golden bridge we were sold. Well, I don't know exactly how I'm proceeding to get out of the contract (thank God my brother is an attorney so the bill for that will at least be free, unlike the useless internet this month), but I can assure you I will do everything I can to ensure this doesn't happen to another poor soul like me. I may not be famous with a million followers on FB, but hopefully the 32k friends I do have will be a good start at passing this story along. Don't get mislead like me people, because they don't care if your internet is completely useless after that cap, or if you are mislead. That's the only thing they do make crystal clear. Sad, mad and disgusted, but making it known everyday from now on. I will help others.
