Viasat MEO & LEO & GEO Working Together!!

This looks promising if the funds are made available. Impressive 96Gigs per LEO sat is outstanding and will lead to a smaller amount of sats(288) in space. Also concentrating on the US Market will help the decision made for funds to be given to Viasat, its a win win.

[installer] Installer tip

Viasat sent one of their tips & tricks videos recently with a tip that sounds better (to me) than it probably is. I use my variation on it You know how difficult it is sometimes (often) to push the cable thru a wall with insulation in it? (especially ethernet cable) Their tip was to insert a milk shake straw thru the hole then push the cable thru straw. If you can't get a cable thru, how ya gonna get a straw thru? sheesh I keep a 16" length of soft copper water pipe in my bag 3/8" OD and ID is just big enough to push a coax thru The pipe is sturdy enough to jab thru the insulation that likes to close up the hole path I used to use a 1/4" stiff plastic rod with a hole drilled thru it When I couldn't get cable thru I would strip the coax back to get a long stinger and poke it thru the hole-in-rod Jam the rod thru and cable would follow Try it - you will like it 'Course it costs $7 vs free - but works every time....

Viasat better than Hughes?

I know it's probably comparing different sides of the same coin. I know some people that used HughesNet a few years ago - perhaps 5 to 10 years ago - it was really horrible. But there wasn't a lot of choices. I've got a situation where I really need upload capacity - at least 5mbps would be ideal, 10mbps would be even better (it's for live streaming) - but there's not a lot of options for Internet at this location (nothing wired based). HughesNet and Viasat were brought up, but given the (albeit limited) experience I had with HughesNet I just don't know if I can recommend either to them. A cellular based connection... works... sorta, OK at that location. Would I like for it be better? Absolutely. But it's cheaper than satellite, can be moved around if needed, and since it's prepaid there's no tying commitment. If I really knew Viasat (or for that matter Hughes) would offer a consistent and stable improvement, I might could recommend it. But I just really don't have a lot of confidence with satellite Internet. Sway my opinion?

Viasat removes caps for BizAv connectivity

8 July 2020 You might think that 16 megabits per second is pretty fast for an inflight wifi connection. But Viasat wants its business aviation connectivity customers to have more than that. The company officially removed speed caps from its Ka-band contracts this week, allowing aircraft owners to access whatever is available in the network, whatever the hardware and the link budget can support. Our hope is to change the conversation for people having to worry about peak speeds. They’re welcome to do speed tests if they want but our hope is that people don’t feel the need to do a speed test because it’s doing everything they want to do on the aircraft. It’s giving them that passenger experience that they’re that they’ve hoped for, now they can experience for real. – James Person, Sr. Director of Business Development and Strategy for Business Aviation

Will Changing Modem/Routers Increase Speed for Viasat

We are on an older plan for Viasat/Exede the Freedom 150GB Boost 25. We used to be reasonably OK with the speed but for the last six months our speeds have really dropped almost down to Century Link DSL. Donwload speeds typically range from 3-6 Mbps. So would a third party modem/router help? Or are there other suggestions to get better speeds....would changing plans help? When I call them they say we are on an old plan and they are trying to get people off this plan. This leads me to think that it must be a good plan if they want us to go to a different plan. HELP! please TIA

ViaSat Performance /Support in North Georgia Has Been Disappointing

I tried to find as much info as I could before choosing between ViaSat and Hughesnet 2 years ago. All I can say is I’m very dissatisfied with both the service and support in my location of north Ga. I have the best plan available 12Mbps/65gig data and routinely see Download speeds of less than 1Mbps and .02 down many weekday evenings (not data limited). 8 attempts with tech support has failed to improve or even identify what the issue might be. Every 1st line support person follows the exact same procedure (reboot modem then factory reset). I’ve reached a 2nd line supervisor twice with the same results. They did send out a technician to check dish alignment but it was fine Bottom line is they have oversold the service in my area but won’t/can’t admit it so I have no other option but to try switching to Hughesnet. ViaSat offered a business plan but I can’t get line of sight to VS-1 satellite so that’s not an option. Maybe this will be helpful info to someone considering service in the southeast US.

[Viasat] Modem rescans constantly fails to connect

I turn my modem off daily to reduce data usage. Always has connected OK when turned back on (takes a few minutes of course). Last couple days it goes thru the sequence and seems to fail & starts again. Yesterday took 10 minutes to connect, today 30 minutes. "Technical help" on the phone is a joke. S/N ratio isn't great this time of year (3 - 4) because of morning fog, but wasn't any different than usual -- can get down to 2.5 & still be OK. I can reset the modem from the hole in back, but doubt that'll help. RX power -51 dB, S/N 3.2, Resist 1.5 ohm, cable atten 3.5 dB. Edit: Liberty plan (cheapest) -- simple modem w/one ethernet connection, no wifi.

In the meantime, Viasat provides broadband services through its fleet of three satellites, ViaSat-2, ViaSat-1 and WildBlue-1, and with capacity leased on partner satellites. The company reported $530.5 million in revenue for the months of April, May and June, down $6.5 million from the same quarter in 2019. Dankberg, in an Aug. 7 letter to shareholders, said around 630 aircraft with ViaSat terminals installed were inactive during the quarter, down 45%, and that passenger Wi-Fi use on flying planes was also low. Residential broadband subscribers grew, however, up 9,000 to 599,000 total with customers choosing higher-tiered internet plans, he wrote. Average revenue per user passed $99, up 18%, as pandemic-induced transitions to work-from-home and school-from-home environments drove demand for household satellite internet, he said. https://spacenews.com/coronavirus-adds-to-viasat-3-delay-first-launch-still-in-2021/

Aug 27, 2020 - Viasat, Inc. VSAT stated that its business aviation in-flight connectivity (IFC) system secured the Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) from the Federal Aviation Administration through Gulfstream Aerospace. This certifies the use of Viasat’s Ka-band IFC system on the Gulfstream G650 and Gulfstream G650ER business jets. ... ... The Carlsbad, CA-based company’s Ka-band solutions enable business jet customers to have high-speed Internet connectivity. In recent Ka-band speed tests, customers have seen more than 40 Mbps across the new service plans that enhanced in-flight connectivity experience.

AUG 25 2020 Bill Gates leads $85 million fundraising for satellite antenna specialist Kymeta to scale production ... ... The company’s core product is its “electronically steered” flat satellite antenna, built to replace the dish technology that track moving satellites but also capable of connecting with cellular networks. ... ... Kymeta’s latest antenna is the u8 terminal, which it is beginning a beta trial for a launch to market by year-end. Hutcheson described the u8 terminal as a “transformational” product for the communications industry. He says it is the only one of its kind and can connect with a wide variety of satellites — from the likes of ViaSat’s in the distant geosynchronous orbit to the much closer and smaller SpaceX Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit.

Great upload, bad download speeds

$

I may be one of the few people who has historically received great bandwidth from viasat - until my roof need to be replaced and they had to unmount and remount my dish. Since then the local viasat guy (who has been great) has struggled with the installation and i must admit - I am a bit perplexed as well. When he first re-installed I was getting 50Mbps download and 5 upload. The next morning I was at 2 download, but still 5 upload. Guy came back out, replaced the dish, the tria and the cable. We ran a test and hit 40Mbps download consistently. That lasted about 2 hours and I was back down to 4Mbps download but still at 5 for uploads(!) This morning, after a modem reboot just for grins, I am at 2Mbps download and still at 5Mbps upload. Has anyone seen this before? My experience is that if one is bad the other is also, and 5Mbps upload is not something i routinely see or expect. But i need the download to work too. All speed measured with single computer directly connected to the modem. Any tips appreciated!!! Thanks!

It's emerged that SpaceX's Starlink satellites have been delivering internet services since early August to the Washington state military's emergency management unit helping residents recover from recent wildfires. SpaceX showed internet performance tests with download speeds of between 102Mbps to 103Mbps, upload speeds of 40.5Mbps to not quite 42Mbps, and a latency of 18 milliseconds to 19 milliseconds. https://www.zdnet.com/article/spacexs-starlink-in-action-internet-satellites-keep-emergency-workers-online-amid-wildfires/

[Viasat] Viasat still throttling PSN and Xbox Live

I tried to do a game update on my PS4 during the free zone, a relatively small one only 2GB, and it said it was going to take 11 hours to finish. So apparently Viasat is still slowing speeds down for Playstation Network. I contacted tech support and they stated that was not the case. Either he was lying or ignorant of the fact. Edit: the technician was definitely wrong or lying. I connected my PS4 to a VPN and got my normal speeds installing an update.
