Viasat gives FCC an ultimatum to stop SpaceX Starlink expansion SpaceX’s Starlink deployment could face a new hurdle, with satellite operator Viasat petitioning the FCC to stop Elon Musk’s company from expanding its internet-beaming constellation. Viasat, itself a satellite internet provider, has accused Starlink of being a potential environmental nightmare, as SpaceX targets more than 4,400 satellites in total. https://www.slashgear.com/viasat-gives-fcc-an-ultimatum-to-stop-spacex-starlink-expansion-25674457/

I told my customer I didn't like the place he wanted me to bring the cable in. There was a breaker panel near by and even closer was a three way switch plate. I wanted to go real close the floor or up thru the floor (nice mobile home). He insisted so I had him use my sharpie to make an X where I should drill. I got cold feet so told him he had to drill (I snapped a pic of him doing it)(cya thing) So after the lights went out I went outside to cut a 2'x2' hole in the side of his house for him so he could have access to his new electrical project. He managed to allllllmost drill between two circuits but nicked them both...awkward moment....

[Viasat] VS-1 or VS-2?

Merely out of curiosity, i am curious if all installations are now VS-2, or if its a toss up depending on location? For VS-1, i am in central FL, beam 359. Im also curious if the original surfbeam 2 and original tria are still being deployed, or only the wifi modem and 2nd generation tria are being deployed on VS-1 installs? For a short period, i worked as a contractor (pre VS-2) and seen all combos. wifi modem with new or old tria, sb2 with new or old tria etc. I remember choosing that if you had desired wifi or not was an option, which typically ruled you to get the wifi modem. Our vacation cabin (also b359) is on an old liberty plan using the 'late' light-weight dish, with the first generation TRIA on the adapter bracket they had used for some time, and the wifi modem. Overall, considering the minimal use, we have no issues and get a consistent 12/4-5 Anyhow, im just curious what they are doing these days. Here is a SS of what plans are available in my area.

We are stuck on “permanent vacation hold” due to a Viasat “glitch”. I called to come off vacation mode in April, things were ok, left in May and when we returned in June it’s back on vacation and they had to escalate to corporate to fix in 3-5 business days. Monday is biz day 5 and they offer no guarantee it will be fixed, repair clock just resets to another 3-5 days. Escalating to supervisor/manager goes nowhere, and Wednesday eve received a prank call from supervisor claiming to be Amanda who told me it was repaired and she applied a $50 credit when in fact it’s not working and there was no notation on my account of any such possible repair/credit. Guessing that was retaliation for us reporting to another manager that “Amanda” was supposed to call us Tuesday at 12:30 and never did. Would love to cancel but only option is Hughesnet.

Hughesnet vs. Viasat

Hughesnet vs. Viasat: Clash of the satellite internet titans These two major providers are often the only choices for customers in remote parts of rural America. Which one comes out on top? ... ... Still, established satellite providers can offer service pretty much anywhere, and if nothing else is available, your choice boils down to Hughesnet and Viasat. (Apologies to Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet, which is only available to a limited number of customers in select areas across the country thus far.) Picking between the two might feel like picking between Coke and Pepsi -- a matter of taste between two largely identical products -- but there are some distinct differences you'll want to be well aware of before deciding. Let's have a look. https://www.cnet.com/home/internet/hughesnet-vs-viasat/

[Viasat] Viasat posts record revenues

Viasat posts record revenues as global broadband plan progresses Viasat posted record fiscal Q1 revenues of $665 million, up 25% year-over-year, as elements of its business, including in-flight connectivity (IFC), showed more signs of recovering from the earlier phases of the pandemic. ... ... Viasat's residential fixed satellite broadband business was a mixed bag. The company lost some US broadband customers, but didn't disclose that specific figure. However, the company noted that customers who are staying on board are continuing to upgrade to speedier, more expensive data service plans. With those factors combined, Viasat expects revenues for this piece of the business to stay relatively flat. Subscriber growth in that category, at least in the US, may have to wait as current capacity is largely being used up, according to Mark Dankberg, Viasat's chairman and executive chairman. https://www.lightreading.com/satellite/viasat-posts-record-revenues-as-global-broadband-plan-progresses/d/d-id/771347

Warning to Viasat customers - "Data Extender"

Here's a warning to Viasat customers: If you are having speed or streaming problems, it could be due to Viasat's new "Data Extender" which was announced in an email subject "Introducing our improved Unlimited data plans" in late September, 2021. The Data Extender is now ON by default, and I found that my ability to stream at 480p with Gold Unlimited plan was killed by the Data Extender... YouTube playback defaulted to 360p and Amazon movies would just not start. YouTube videos would not play at 480p without buffering. To turn off the Data Extender, log into https://my.viasat.com, then click on Plan & Usage, then turn Data Extender to OFF. Once turned OFF, my streaming has returned to normal.

Space broadband outfit Viasat acquires rival Inmarsat Promises to keep Inmarsat's commitments to build more stuff in Blighty The combined company will operate 19 satellites, with another ten under construction and headed for space between now and 2024. .... ... Left unmentioned is that Viasat and Inmarsat have had the satellite broadband market largely to themselves for years, but now face aggressive new competitors in the form of Elon Musk's Starlink and Amazon.com's planned constellation of 7,774 satellites. Other players – among them UK-based BT – collectively plan to send thousands more broadband-beaming birds into orbit in coming years. Viasat and Inmarsat seem to think their combined resources have sufficient opportunity to thrive despite burgeoning competition, citing "new IoT applications and greater utilization of global space assets" as driving demand. https://www.theregister.com/2021/11/10/viasat_acquires_inmarsat/

Nov 9 (Reuters) - Viasat to offer 'low-cost' satellite internet to remote areas in Latin America Satellite internet company Viasat (VSAT.O) will enter Latin America as an internet provider targeting remote communities with limited connectivity, the company said on Tuesday, seeking to win customers where telecoms have failed to make inroads. "We can drive the cost of (internet) delivery down dramatically," Rick Baldridge, Viasat President and chief executive, said in an interview. "That allows us to go anywhere. To do that at a very, very low cost." https://www.reuters.com/technology/viasat-offer-low-cost-satellite-internet-remote-areas-latin-america-2021-11-09/
