In this article dated July 1, 2015, The crazy economics of inflight Wi-Fi, an overview of this topic is given. I believe there are two key players who can deliver the bandwidth, ViaSat and Intelsat. Last week, Intelsat launched their next-gen satellite system, which will be used for "aeronautical and maritime sectors" within North Atlantic, which is where densest traffic exists. As noted, "Panasonic Avionics, one of the big players in inflight entertainment, was one of the first customers to buy capacity on the new satellite." ViaSat-2 will cover this same region. As can be seen in Intelsat's Ku Band: Multi Spot & Trans-Atlantic Beams, it will allow for spot beams across North Atlantic. ViaSat will use Ka band frequency, which allows for more bandwidth. Not knowing how much potential bandwidth will be needed for North Atlantic, one can not predict. ViaSat's satellite will deliver more bits per beam, so I suppose the lowest bidder may have an advantage.
