We had exede internet for 4 months because no dsl provider would service our new home. We're about a mile outside of comcast's serviceable area, and trust me, I would gladly have my pockets raided by comcast than these crooks. We were getting 15mb/s which was awesome for our neck of the woods but paying $90 a month for a 15 Gb data cap on our HOME INTERNET. Needless to say, we burned through that in 3 weeks or less while conserving as much as we could. We actually had to change our habits based on the internet provider we had.
So, we switched. We finally found a point to point wireless company that's local and no longer need our satellite internet. One problem: Exede has a minimum 24 month contract that you are signed into over the phone with a commission-based sales rep. However, one light of hope: Nowhere in this absurd contract where they literally take away your right to trial by jury during a dispute does it ever require a minimum data purchase each month. So.....called up customer service asking to purchase 0 data from them for the remaining 20 months of our contract. Not so surprisingly, this is not an option (go figure). I said these exact words, "You cannot legally force us to buy data from you, I don't care that you don't have a plan for it, it's not in writing."
Jump forward a day or two and I found their exede communist forum. I posted on any and every topic to tell anyone who would listen how unjust and shady this company is, and what do you know, they took down every single one of my posts citing them to contain inappropriate content or private information (neither of which was true).
Finally got a response and a message to email exedelistens@viasat.com
They asked for name and acct # to reach me, I obliged.
Exede Kim (actually very nice but albeit unhelpful) offered to cut our early termination fees in half (from over $300 to around $150) to which I replied "absolutely not."
First of all, I never signed a contract, it was signed for me electronically. Second of all, THEY CANNOT FORCE YOU TO BUY DATA. And lastly, in order to return the equipment that a technician installed on your roof and in your home, YOU, as the consumer must take it down. Yep, get your butt up on that icy roof, because Exede is taking you to the cleaners.
And, as I've seen, about half the time even when you do send the equipment back, they charge your account anyway claiming to have never received it.
Asked to have a request put in to their corporate office to waive any and all termination fees and just send me the box, so we could be done with this mess. She replies that in order to do that, they must terminate my account first. I asked, "Well, what happens if and WHEN corporate denies my request?"
"Well, sir, you will be charged the full amount for your early termination."
"Well, just send in the request and don't terminate me yet, there's still three weeks left on my billing cycle."
"Sorry, (the world doesn't work that way, and Exede hates you)"
Apparently the only way to get through to these people is to head to the BBB, and if that doesn't work, make a claim in small claims court. Guaranteed, they will get what is coming to them. It might be my money, but you better believe it will cost them more than it's worth to charge me for absolutely nothing.
